History of Puthuppally Pally
The history of Puthuppally and neighbouring places is intimately associated with the history and growth of this famous church. Far back
in 1557 the first ' Puthuppally Church ' was built on the hillock of ' Kochupallikunnu '. In 1640, the church was shifted to the hillock of Elamthuruth and consecrated to the memory of Bahanan Sahada.

Bahanan was born to king Senhereez who ruled Asoor or Mussal in the kingdom of Persia. Young Behanan , during one of his hunting sprees, happened to meet a Christian monk, Mathai. The monk prayed for his sister Sarah and, as a result, she was cured of an otherwise incurable dreadful disease.

The brother and sister accepted Christ as their Saviour. The Lord God was pleased, not their father, the king Bahanan and Sarah were slain. The Orthodox Church recognized these martyrs as saints.

Keeping ' The Bahanan Sahadha Pally ' in tact, the building was expanded in 1750. 'The newly built portion was dedicated to Gee Varghese Sahadha'. Thus came into existence what is now popularly called 'Puthuppally Valiyapally'.
To make the church building look more impressive and regal, a high-rise Bell Tower and an imposing façade were added to it in about 1910. The specially designed multi-prolonged spire of glorious medieval architecture was a major centre of attraction those days

Recently the church building was partly demolished without damaging the central portion and the High Altar, and re-built to provide enough room for the ever-growing number of worshippers. The renovation was completed in 2003.
